Some requests to Hindus when using the English language…

#1. Please stop using the term “God fearing”. Hindus don’t fear God / the divine. For Hindus, Gods (incl Goddesses) are everywhere, including within us. They are not a separate entity to fear. They are to aspire to become, to respect & love.

#2. Please do not use the meaningless term “RIP” when a Hindu passes away. RIP is a wish for the soul to rest in peace until judgement day. Hinduism neither has the concept of judgement day nor of the soul ‘resting’ till that day. The atma (soul) is either reborn or attains moksha (is liberated and merges with the divine). Use “Om Shanti”, or “I wish this atma attains Moksha / Sadgati”.

#3. Please don’t use the word “mythology” for our epics like Ramayana, Mahabharata, etc. Use Itihaas (meaning “thus it happened”).

#4. Please don’t be apologetic about murti worship. Also, please don’t call them ‘idols’, ‘statues’ or ‘images’ when we refer to physical representations of our divine beings / Gods / Goddesses. Please use the terms ‘moorti’ or ‘vigraha’. They are not lifeless objects but are assumed to have prana in then. If you use it often, eventually all other people will start to use it too.

#5. Please remove the word blasphemy from your vocabulary while referring to anything about Hinduism. Blasphemy (questioning the word of God) as a concept does not exist in Hinduism. Nobody is beyond question. So nothing is ever blasphemy.

#6. Please don’t use the word “sin”. We only have Dharma (duty, righteousness, responsibility, etc) and Adharma (when dharma is not followed). Dharma has nothing to do with social or religious morality. ‘Paap’ derives from Adharma. Since there is no blasphemy in Hindu dharma, there is no sin.

#7. Please avoid using the words “spirituality” & “materialistic”. For a Hindu, everything is of the universe & from the universe. The separation of material and non-material comes from European Christians who had a separation of Church(divine) vs State(material) or Science(material) vs Religion(divine). In Bharat, sages were scientists and the foundation of Sanatana Dharma is science.

And lastly, it is Ganga, NOT Ganges…
